A Pillow is Not Enough

December 22, 2011

Millions of people suffer from allergic reactions to dust and dust mites. The allergens put out by dust mites are very low in general, but become concentrated in certain areas like sofas, beds and pillows. Of course these are the same places we rest our heads which means you are likely to inhale a lot of dust mite allergen. So do you really need a dust mite cover? Well, let’s look at the facts.

Dust mites are tiny creatures, almost invisible. They can make their homes anywhere there is dust to eat, which means they are found in every household, however there are certain places they are most concentrated. They tend to like things with deep fibers and lots of tiny crevices, like the fabric used to upholster furniture, or the linens and cottons used in sheets, blankets, pillows and pillow cases. They will even make their way into the stuffing of pillows.

The solution many allergy sufferers use is to get an allergy pillow. These are special pillows that are made with synthetic micro-fibers. These fibers rebel dust mites and they are so tightly woven than there is no pore big enough for even a microscopic dust mite to pass through.

Many people buy these wonderful pillows, which work – and then put a normal pillow case on them. You know, a pillow case made from linen or cotton with deep fibers where dust mites can nest. Ironic, isn’t it? That’s why I suggest dust mite covers for all your allergy pillows!
